# Use Cases and Integration Roadmap: Sublinear-Time Solver in RuVector

## 1. Executive Summary
|
|
|
|
This document analyzes the intersection between the ruvector vector database ecosystem
|
|
(v2.0.3, 75+ Rust crates) and the sublinear-time-solver library. The sublinear-time
|
|
solver provides O(sqrt(n)) to O(n * polylog(n)) algorithms for sparse linear systems,
|
|
PageRank, graph Laplacians, and equilibrium computation -- capabilities that align
|
|
directly with at least six major ruvector subsystems and enable twelve new use cases
|
|
that are currently impossible or computationally prohibitive.
|
|
|
|
### Key Findings
|
|
|
|
- **Direct overlap**: 6 ruvector subsystems already perform operations the solver
|
|
accelerates (graph queries, GNN training, attention computation, economic modeling,
|
|
distributed consensus, sparse inference).

## 2. Current RuVector Use Cases and Capabilities
|
|
|
|
### 2.1 Core Vector Database (`ruvector-core`)
|
|
|
|
**Use Cases**: Embedding storage, approximate nearest neighbor search, RAG pipelines,
|
|
semantic search.
|
|
|
|
**Relevant Capabilities**:
|
|
- HNSW indexing with O(log n) search complexity (~2.5K queries/sec on 10K vectors)
|
|
- SIMD-optimized distance calculations (SimSIMD, ~16M ops/sec for 512-dim)
|

- Scalar, Int4, Product, and Binary quantization (4x-32x compression)

**Matrix Operations**: Distance computations are fundamentally matrix-vector products.
|
|
Current implementation uses dense SIMD kernels. For large-scale batch queries (>100K
|
|
vectors), the distance matrix becomes sparse in practice (most vectors are irrelevant
|
|
to a given query), but the system does not exploit this sparsity.
|
|
|
|

### 3.1 Graph Laplacian Solving (Overlap: 5/5)

**Impact**: The graph Laplacian is the single most common bottleneck across ruvector's
|
|
graph subsystems. PageRank, community detection, spectral clustering, effective
|
|
resistance, and graph diffusion all reduce to Laplacian linear systems. The solver
|
|
replaces iterative methods that currently require O(m * k) work (k iterations) with
|
|
O(m * polylog(n)) near-linear time solutions.
|
|
|
|
**Estimated Speedup**: 10x-100x for graphs with >100K vertices, depending on condition
|
|
number and sparsity.
|
|
|
|

**How**: The Sinkhorn algorithm in `ruvector-math` is O(n^2) per iteration. The

solver reformulates optimal transport as a min-cost flow problem on a bipartite

graph, solvable in O(n * polylog(n)) time for sparse cost matrices.

## Appendix B: Suitability Exclusion Criteria
|
|
|
|
The following conditions indicate that the sublinear-time solver should NOT be used.
|
|
These checks are implemented in `SparseSolver::should_use_solver()`:
|
|
|
|
1. **Small dense matrices**: n < 5000 and density > 10%. Dense BLAS is faster.
|
|
2. **Exact precision required**: Application requires machine-epsilon accuracy
|
|
(e.g., financial accounting). Solver provides configurable epsilon but cannot
|
|
guarantee exact arithmetic.
|
|
3. **Ill-conditioned systems**: Condition number kappa > 10^12. Solver convergence
|
|
is not guaranteed. Fall back to direct methods (LU decomposition).
|
|
4. **Non-sparse structure**: Matrices with density > 30% do not benefit from
|
|
sparse algorithms. Dense methods have lower overhead.
|
|
5. **Very small problems**: n < 100. Function call overhead dominates; inline
|
|
computation is faster.
